SERGIO SUAREZ

BIOGRAPHY

Artist Sergio Suarez (b. Mexico, 1995) works across a diverse range of media including painting, sculpture, and various forms of print making. Originally inspired by the aesthetic structures of Baroque art and pre-Hispanic (pre-Columbian) ruins, the artist has developed his own kind of celestial iconography.  In Suarez images human figures and glowing orbs hurtle through shifting natural landscapes and gravity defying architectures.

The artist often begins a series by carving such a scene into a woodblock. He then stains the surfaces of these monumental tablets with ink and prints the image on canvas. Sometimes Suarez will print the scene as it appears in its entirety – while others, he will sample sections from various woodblocks, compiling elements from different tableaux onto a single canvas. As structures and narratives collide, time seems to collapse and the impression sets in that we may be seeing the same moment from multiple vantage points at once. Presenting reality as the product of infinite intertwining plotlines unfolding simultaneously, the artist evokes the alchemy of our collective experience.

By transgressing traditional boundaries between mediums, Suarez mixes art-making materials and processes to develop the enchanting visual language typical of his practice. Most recently, he has been cultivating the surfaces of his printed canvasses with paint and sculptural objects. Adding these dimensional layers to the work, the artist gives form to the metaphysical forces swirling through his cosmic mythologies.

Suárez’s work has been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Asia. Recent exhibitions include Corta Distancia at the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, The End is Near! at the Atlanta Contemporary and Artists of Latin American Heritage at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Georgia. Internationally he’s shown at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London, the Haugesund International Relief Festival in Norway, OPED Space in Tokyo, and the Ionian Arts Center in Greece, where he was an artist in residency in 2017 and 18. His work is also included in the SGCI archives of the Zuckerman Museum in Kennesaw, Georgia.

The artist lives and works in Atlanta, GA where he is currently part of the Studio Artist Program at the Atlanta Contemporary. He has been accepted into several prestigious artist residencies. This year he will complete programs at the Penland School of Craft in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, The Oficina Stamperia Del Notorio in Tusa, Italy and Stoveworks in Chattanooga, TN.
